A superb original pair of architectural etchings by the celebrated British printmaker Valerie Thornton (1931–1991), dating from the 1960s. Beautifully presented in their original brass frames, the works demonstrate Thornton’s exceptional mastery of line, texture, and perspective, qualities that established her as one of Britain’s foremost architectural printmakers.
The first etching, Artist’s Proof, explores an abstracted geometric cityscape through a carefully balanced arrangement of architectural forms and rhythmic linear detail. The second, a limited edition impression (29/30), depicts the richly ornamented façade of a Gothic cathedral with remarkable precision, capturing the grandeur and intricacy of medieval stonework.
Executed with Thornton’s characteristic sensitivity to light, structure, and composition, these complementary works perfectly showcase her fascination with both modern and historic architecture. Their understated brass frames enhance the refined monochrome imagery, making them ideal for both contemporary and traditional interiors.
